At a glance

What
A mobile peripheral that tracks the device's position and heading on a museum exhibit and overlays content there: near-surface AR.
Why
Mobile AR in museums pulls visitors' eyes to a screen away from the exhibit, and pinning content to the surface would mean a printed pattern or fixture on every exhibit.
How
An RFID tag identifies the exhibit and fixes the origin; Kalman filters fuse two displacement sensors, for coarse and glossy surfaces, with an IMU, and the app moves the content the opposite way.
New
The exhibit needs only a thin tag; tracking holds on acrylic, paper, wood and fabric while hovering up to 13 mm. Four forms followed, from smartphone magnifier to toy vehicle.
